Carpet Cleaning Brent is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet and upholstery cleaning activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all domestic and commercial premises where we operate.

We recognise our duty of care and our responsibility to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and accepted industry standards for professional cleaning services. We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective controls.

Policy Aims and Objectives

Our health and safety objectives are to:

Identify, assess and control risks arising from our cleaning operations, equipment and products.

Provide safe systems of work for carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning in homes, offices and other premises.

Ensure that all employees are competent to carry out their duties through appropriate training, instruction and supervision.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Carpet Cleaning Brent rests with the company management. Management will ensure that this policy is implemented, monitored and reviewed, and that adequate resources are provided to maintain high health and safety standards.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day implementation of this policy on site, including briefing staff on job specific risks, checking that controls are in place and ensuring that any concerns are reported promptly.

All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow all safety procedures, use equipment correctly, wear personal protective equipment where required and report hazards, defects and incidents without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before commencing any carpet cleaning job, relevant risks will be considered, including trip hazards from hoses and cables, slips on wet floors, manual handling of machinery, exposure to chemicals and any special risks present within the premises. Where appropriate, a site specific assessment will be carried out.

Safe systems of work for tasks such as hot water extraction, stain removal, spot treatment and machinery operation will be established, documented where necessary and communicated to staff. These systems include guidance on correct setup of equipment, securing hoses and cables to reduce trips, marking wet areas, safe lifting techniques and use of appropriate tools.

COSHH and Chemical Safety

We use a range of carpet and upholstery cleaning products, including detergents, stain removers and sanitisers. All such substances are assessed in accordance with the principles of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. Safety data and instructions provided by manufacturers are followed at all times.

Chemicals are stored securely in suitable containers with clear labels. Only trained staff may handle and dilute chemicals. Products are used only for their intended purpose and in the recommended concentrations. Adequate ventilation is ensured when using products that may release vapours or aerosols.

Personal Protective Equipment

Carpet Cleaning Brent provides suitable personal protective equipment where required by risk assessment. This may include gloves, eye protection, protective footwear, face masks or other items appropriate to the task.

Employees must use the equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any damage or defects immediately so that replacements can be arranged. Personal protective equipment is not a substitute for safe working practices and is used alongside other control measures.

Equipment Safety and Maintenance

All machinery and equipment used in our cleaning operations, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuums and accessories, are selected, maintained and used with safety in mind. Work Areas, Slips, Trips and Falls

We take care to maintain safe work areas during cleaning operations. Hoses, cables and tools are routed and positioned to minimise trip hazards. Wet areas are clearly identified, and access is restricted where reasonably practicable until carpets or floors have dried to a safe level.

Staff are instructed to maintain good housekeeping, keeping walkways as clear as possible and promptly cleaning up any spills.

Training, Information and Supervision

All employees receive health and safety induction training when they join Carpet Cleaning Brent, together with task specific training for the work they undertake. Ongoing refresher training is provided when new equipment, products or procedures are introduced or where additional guidance is required.

Information on hazards, control measures and emergency procedures is communicated clearly to staff. Supervision is provided to ensure that safe systems of work are understood and followed.

Emergency Procedures and First Aid

Employees are briefed on what to do in the event of fire, accident, chemical spill or other emergency at a client site. First aid supplies are available to operatives, and incidents requiring medical attention are reported promptly in line with company procedures.

All accidents, incidents and near misses are recorded and reviewed so that any underlying causes can be identified and corrective actions implemented.
